The culture of olive cultivation on Brač is believed to be as ancient as its civilization itself and is thought to have been brought to the island by Greeks in antiquity. About one million olive trees grow on Brač today, and the island itself is considered the largest olive-growing area in the Republic of Croatia. Harvesting is mostly done manually from October to December.
The dominating variety of olive on the island is oblica, also called the “Brač” olive, followed by buhavica, which is indigenous to the eastern part of Brač, and levantinka, an excellent pollinator of autochthonous varieties.
Olive oil is food, an irreplaceable addition to the kitchen, a medicament, and a cosmetic product . Brač olive oil is extremely high in quality, characterized by its specific, fruity aroma, moderate bitterness, pleasant smell, and characteristic olive-green color. It makes a supreme souvenir from our beautiful island.
“The Olive Roads” walking trail, marked by the Supetar Tourist Board, begins in the quiet, picturesque town of Mirca.
An inviting 5-km-long, circular trail guides you through the most beautiful olive groves above the town all the way to Prihod—the old irrigation system. This place has played an important role in the history of Mirca since ancient times. Water was poured over from these reservoirs to solme (barrels) or maštile (basins), which the local women carried on their heads.
Walking along the olive trails, guided by the markings, you will learn about the tradition of olive oil production, the types of olives, and the value of this liquid gold. This thematic trail offers year-round appeal for those seeking recreation and relaxation in the fresh air.
The Supetar Tourist Board has enhanced its offer with the Olive Trek web app, which provides a unique tour of olive groves using the latest technology, featuring digital paths with detailed information on their length, altitude, and duration of the tour.
All additional locations where visitors can find more information have been fully digitized and included on a digital map, all fully equipped with QR codes, providing you with a breadth of information in multiple languages. Visitors can navigate directly to the trail or download GPX coordinates with an overview of the length of the track, types of terrain, altitude, and average duration of the tour.
In addition to accessing information through descriptions, visitors can view and take photographs with equipment such as mills, presses, and stone troughs at the sites themselves using the cameras on their phones. This feature is compatible with both Android and iOS.
Enjoy walking along the olive trails of Mirca!
